Staff Attorney

Prisoners' Legal Services of New York (PLS) is seeking applicants for a staff attorney position in our Ithaca, New York regional office.

PLS is a statewide program providing civil legal services to people incarcerated in New York State prisons. We have regional offices in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca and Plattsburgh. PLS represents inmates in cases that include accessing mental health and medical care; prison disciplinary matters; excessive force; conditions of confinement; sentence calculation; and jail time credit. We handle service cases, individual lawsuits, and impact litigation. We provide high quality legal services and have been successful in establishing important rights for our clients.

We are looking for an attorney who is committed to providing legal services to the disadvantaged. Applicants must be admitted to practice in New York State or eligible for admission pro hac vice and willing to take the next available bar exam. We are interested in recent law school graduates with prior experience in public interest law or attorneys with experience in the areas of civil legal services, civil rights, poverty law or federal litigation. Fluency in Spanish is a highly desirable - although not an essential - qualification. The Ithaca office is staffed by a managing attorney, three staff attorneys, a paralegal and support staff who collaborate with other PLS staff throughout the state. This position is available immediately.

Managing Attorney
 Buffalo, NY

Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is seeking applicants for a Managing Attorney position in our Buffalo, New York regional office.

PLS is a statewide program providing civil legal services to people incarcerated in New York State prisons. Our Central office is in Albany. We have regional offices in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca and Plattsburgh. PLS represents inmates in condition of confinement cases including those that involve mental health and medical care; prison disciplinary matters; excessive use of force; sentence calculation; and jail time credit. We handle service work, individual lawsuits, and impact litigation. We provide high quality legal services and have been successful in establishing important rights for our clients.

We seek to hire a Managing Attorney who is committed to providing legal services to the disadvantaged. The Managing Attorney position requires the skills of a lawyer, a litigator, a supervisor, an administrative manager and a personnel manager. Applicants must be admitted to practice in New York State or eligible for admission, pro hac vice, and be willing to take the next available bar exam. Applicants must also have a minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience preferably in the areas of civil legal services, civil rights, poverty law or federal litigation and three (3) years of management experience. We have a serious need for staff who are fluent in Spanish. This position is available immediately.
