Managing Attorney Position – Albany, New York

Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is searching for a Managing Attorney for our Albany, New York regional office. PLS is a statewide program providing civil legal services to people incarcerated in New York State prisons. PLS engages in administrative advocacy and litigation primarily in cases involving civil rights, claims of deliberate indifference to serious mental health and medical needs, conditions of confinement, prolonged placement in solitary confinement, the mental health treatment provided to juveniles and veterans, child visitation and support, excessive use of force and sentence computation issues. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to providing legal services to the disadvantaged.

The Albany Office Managing Attorney is responsible for the operation of the Albany regional office and of PLS’ Pro Bono Unit. The position requires the skills of a lawyer, a litigator, a supervisor, an administrative manager and a personnel manager. Applicants should be self-motivated and capable of complex analytical work. Applicants must also possess excellent legal research and writing skills, strong communications skills, and a desire to work in a collaborative work environment.

Applicants must be admitted to practice in New York State or eligible for admission, pro hac vice, and be willing to take the next available bar exam. Applicants must also have a minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience, preferably in at least one of the following areas: prisoners’ rights, New York State family law, veterans’ rights, civil legal services, civil rights, poverty law or federal litigation, and three (3) years of management experience. We have a serious need for staff who are fluent in Spanish.

Immigration Managing Attorney Position – Albany, New York

Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is a statewide program providing civil legal services to people incarcerated in New York State prisons with regional offices in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca and Plattsburgh. 

PLS is seeking an attorney to manage and supervise PLS’ Immigration Unit which provides legal representation to over 250 immigrants incarcerated in New York State prisons who are facing deportation. We seek to minimize the harsh and disproportionate immigration consequences of contact with the criminal justice system by providing highly qualified and competent representation to immigrants facing deportation. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in immigration and preferably crimmigration law; a demonstrable interest in practicing immigration law; experience in Deportation/Removal Defense; supervisory or management experience, and be fluent in Spanish. The applicant should also be detailed oriented, organized, a team player, passionate about immigration and dedicated to the job.

In addition to supervising and managing other immigration attorneys in the unit, the Immigration Managing Attorney will have his/her own caseload and will be responsible for providing a full range of legal services, including, but not limited to, consultation with clients, evaluation of the immigration consequences of criminal dispositions, development and implementation of strategies on criminal-immigration issues, and representation of client’s at master calendar and merits hearings in Immigration Court.

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • JD Degree and bar admission in good standing in New York State
  • Experience in immigration law, which can include clinical or internships
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social justice issues
  • Managerial and/or supervisory experience
  • Ability to work in a respectful, non-judgmental manner
  • Exceptional organization, written and oral communication skills; ability to timely respond to and balance numerous requests for assistance
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Clean and valid New York State drivers license
  • Willingness to travel

 Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is searching for a Spanish speaking Paralegal/Administrative Assistant for our Immigration Unit in our Albany, New York regional office. PLS’ Immigration Unit provides legal representation to over 250 immigrants incarcerated in New York State prisons who are facing deportation. By providing high quality representation to immigrants facing deportation, PLS seeks to minimize the harsh and disproportionate immigration consequences that contact with the criminal justice system often entails.

The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 3 years’ combined experience in the paralegal and administrative/secretarial fields and must be fluent in Spanish. The applicant should also be detailed oriented, organized, a team player, passionate about immigration and dedicated to the job. The position requires an individual who can perform legal secretarial, administrative and paralegal duties and who has extremely strong computer and internet research skills, as well as exceptional writing, organizational and leadership skills. This position also calls for flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, project coordination experience, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as with clients, agencies and vendors.
